Assuring Port Operations By Analyzing Supporting Infrastructures With GIS
Track: Homeland Security
Author(s): William Dollins

Ports represent aggregation points of various incoming and outgoing goods that are use both economically and militarily. As a result, it is of great benefit to the nation to be able to assure the operations of ports in times of peace and crisis. In providing their services, ports perform a wide variety of operations. Many of these operations place requirements on commercial infrastructre networks that can extend well beyond the boundaries of the ports. By focusing on specific operational capabilities of a port, the supporting infrastructure networks can be identified and analyzed to minimize vulnerabilities to port operations. Mission assurance analysts have found GIS tools to be an effective means of identifying, capturing, analyzing and reports information about supporting infrastructure networks and their component assets. This paper will discuss how out-of-the-box GIS tools have been extended to support mission assurance activities for ports and other types of facilities.
