Abstract
ArcIMS Management of a Large Scale Facility's Decommissioning Program Track: Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Author(s): Jim Bollinger, William Austin The U.S. Department of Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS) produced nuclear materials for several diverse applications until production ceased in 1987, refocusing the site's mission on environmental management of legacy waste. With this change, SRS no longer has a need for much of its infrastructure. This excess infrastructure (more than 1,000 facilities) will be decommissioned over the forthcoming years. To support this effort, a highly customized ArcIMS application was developed for use by a broad audience. The application includes specialized contextual help, customized facilities decommissioning information, on-the-fly projection capability, and very high-resolution imagery used as a geographic backdrop. As internal and external dynamic factors change, updates can be quickly made providing the latest information. Content is easily managed, allowing change in granularity with the click of a mouse button. s a result, Web-enabled mapping has had a revolutionary impact on the development and dissemination of decommissioning information at SRS.
