Abstract
Conservation and Recreation Lands GIS Layer for the Great Lakes Track: Ecology and Conservation Author(s): Grant Wilcox, Robb Macleod Ducks Unlimited and its partners have put together a comprehensive Conservation and Recreation Lands (CARL) data layer for five of the Great Lakes states (Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio). CARL will be used to aid in planning efforts for targeting conservation throughout this region. The CARL GIS layer consists of public lands, private lands, and conservation easements. The layer was created through a combination of existing digital data and digitizing hard-copy and electronic maps. This presentation will focus on how this data layer was created using multiple sources and formats. It will also highlight the extent of cooperation that is necessary for developing such a data layer over such a large region. Finally, the presentation will focus on methods for keeping this data set current for future planning efforts.
