Abstract
Police Story: Beat Tracker on Site Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Author(s): Debbie Gifford, Rita Lee-Irvine The Hamilton Police employs 720 sworn and 263 civilian members and services an area of 1,114 square kilometers situated on the western end of Lake Ontario. The citizens of Hamilton demand that the police work together with their communities to solve recurring problems. However, this must be done while balancing the need to react to calls-for-service and investigate crimes. As a result, a pilot project was implemented in one of our Patrol Divisions. Officers are now held responsible for the health of a neighbourhood. To support this strategy, timely and easy-to-access data is now made available to our frontline officers. Beat Tracker, an interactive crime mapping application was developed with Esri using ArcIMS technology. Available on our Intranet, this easily accessible and scaleable tool provides snapshot of crime and disorder within a neighbourhood to help officers develop an appropriate response. Beat Tracker is a first in Canadian policing.
