Abstract
 Breaking Down Barriers: Deprivation Mapping at a Local Scale Track: Modeling Author(s): Ken Field In the UK, published national indices of deprivation are routinely used for resource allocation at a local level yet are constructed from national datasets. Data are usually derived from aggregate population based census sources using comparable geographical frameworks. This can ignore locality specific socio-economic and environmental factors associated with deprivation such as the location of crime hot spots, road traffic accidents, or air pollution levels. The methodology developed here allows the combination of data collected using different spatial frameworks, from a range of sources and at both individual point level and aggregate area level to create a flexible approach to mapping deprivation at the local level. Deprivation surfaces are calculated using a combined statistical and GIS approach to more accurately portray deprivation at the local level in the county of Northamptonshire, UK. This approach has been adopted by local authorities to augment national indices to improve local decision making processes.
