Abstract
![]() Building Internal Community Capacity through Technology: Sibley Consulting and DSNI Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Kyu-Sang (Joshua) Lee, Michelle Thompson, Anna Karwowska Technology is vital to many businesses, governments, and organizations and can be especially useful for Community Base Organizations (CBOs). The Cornell University (Fall 2004) GIS project tackled this issue by analyzing the use of data and technology with the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (DSNI). The community-university partnership between the GIS Workshop Class (Sibley Consulting) and DSNI focused on community economic empowerment. However, this partnership included many more actors and relationships such as Boston Redevelopment Authority, Boston Assessing Department and other public-private agencies that provided the group with the data and technical knowledge needed. While ArcGIS 8.3 was the primary tool, Websurveyor, CommunityViz, and Blackboard were also used for capacity building. The final report is an educational tool for DSNI's development of a geodatabase. The project will serve as a good model for future partnership projects in fostering usage of technology among CBOs.
