Abstract
![]() Harnessing Web-GIS for Megan's Law in New Jersey Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Author(s): Matt Mathan, Faizal Hasham, Shafik Jiwani Union County, New Jersey, has implemented a unique Web-GIS solution, powered by Orion's OnPoint, for internal County staff and public users. Union County has a population of approximately 525,000 and covers 103.4 square miles. The Web site for mapping applications is www.unioncountynj.org/maps. Union County is the first County in New Jersey to use GIS for Megan's Law notification. This application has allowed non-technical users to access data in an easy and effective manner, using a user-friendly geography-based interface. Community groups and nearby residents are notified of potential risks using the convicted sex offenders' database and the OnPoint Web GIS buffer tool. The application has substantially eased access of data to those who require it and has also reduced costs for departments that are using the application. Union County staff have pursued this innovative approach to meeting Megan's Law requirements and fully utilizing the power of Web GIS.
