Abstract
 Design the Geodatabases for Institutional Purposes Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management Author(s): Sergei Andronikov A new Geodatabase format for storing and managing the spatial data within the research and teaching academic environment will be discussed. The pros and cons of this format for sharing the data interdisciplinary between several schools, centers and departments will be analyzed. The necessity and importance of creating a Research Enterprise GIS (REGIS) structure within the Academic Institutions will be proposed. In the presentation the ways to create REGIS will be outlined and the role of Personal and Enterprise type Geodatabases discussed. It will outline that within the diverse and interdisciplinary academic environment a new Geodatabase format as well as a built-up REGIS structure helps to gain success in providing, updating, and sharing data, which results in completing sophisticated multidisciplinary research projects as well as enhancing teaching/training capabilities and providing service to local/regional/state governments. Several examples of successful implementation of a GDB format and REGIS structure in George Mason University will be demonstrated.
