Abstract
Advanced Spatial Analysis Course: Sustainable Land Use Planning and ModelBuilder Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Author(s): Christopher Kroot, Gordon Longsworth Sustainable land use planning requires maps showing many inter-connected natural and cultural systems represented in terms of current and potential human use. This in turn requires representing the landscape as a system of natural processes, human use and human values. It is difficult to create a single map representing this. There is a need to create multiple maps representing different sets of values showing land ranked from conservation priority to level of development suitability. ModelBuilder provides ways to save the steps involved in doing this. The use of models allows input data layers and values applied to those layers to be changed more easily. Re-running the overlay analysis based on changed layers is also easily done. The results are called scenarios, summary maps that can help guide both conservation efforts and development planning. The modeling process and scenario creation will be demonstrated and a planned training module discussed.
