Abstract
![]() Water Infrastructure GIS Database Development Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management Author(s): Kim Wirth, Kyle Belott The Waukesha Water Utility's records for their water distribution system were outdated and unreliable with hundreds of thousands of pieces of data saved in a variety of hard copy and digital formats. Facility identification and location tasks were time-consuming because the utility lacked a single source of reliable information. The lack of a comprehensive database meant that the utility was unable to make critical decisions concerning water supply and water quality issues that are a growing concern in Waukesha County. R.A. Smith & Associates assisted the Waukesha Water Utility in developing and implementing a GIS that takes a comprehensive approach to managing the utility's water distribution system data. The GIS creates efficiencies that include disseminating information quicker to the end user, eliminating duplicity of land base information, and making it easier to locate and update system information.
