Abstract
![]() NOAA's NowCOAST: Developing a Java Connector-Based GIS Web Application Track: Climate, Weather and Atmosphere Author(s): Micah Wengren, E. Matthew Kennedy, Michael Allard, Meredith Westington, John Kelley NowCOAST is a map-based Web portal with centralized access to on-line, real-time weather and water observations and NOAA forecasts for any coastal region in the United States. The portal provides spatially-referenced links to information from meteorological, oceanographic, river, and water quality observing networks to guidance from National Ocean Service (NOS) and National Weather Service (NWS) forecast models and to NWS weather and marine text forecasts. NowCOAST is designed to be accessible to a broad range of users. The site is based upon Java Servlets and Java ServerPages (JSP) in combination with the ArcIMS Java Connector and ArcSDE/Oracle. Java Web technology allows for thin client access to full ArcIMS mapping functionality and future integration with server-side GIS capabilities of ArcGIS 9. Plans for nowCOAST include on-map display of gridded weather forecasts and model output fields from NOS and NWS and the ability to perform limited spatial analysis of these fields.
