Abstract
Shoreline Erosion and Wave Front Modeling Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources Author(s): Hal Gates, Eric Hrnicek Engineers at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Mobile, Alabama, District are using a variety of GIS datasets from many federal agencies including NOAA, NASA, FEMA, USGS, DoD and several local county/municipal governments for validating funds spent on engineered beaches designed to reduce shoreline erosion from storm surges and tidal currents. The two prominent challenges existing for this project are an extremely large volume of GIS and tabular data and continuous coordination/communication of geographic information from the agencies identified by the USACE for use in shoreline protection project designs. ArcSDE, ArcIMS, and ArcGIS Server are all used in a comprehensive enterprise environment which extends the links of GIS data sharing beyond any one organization and reaches out to multiple organizations within the United States Federal Government.
