Abstract
The Black Hills Race Track: A Lakota Cultural Exposition Track: Ecology and Conservation Author(s): Jim Sanovia The Black Hills of Western South Dakota contains a variety of stories, both of geologic and Lakota (Sioux) cultural significance of the Red Race Track which circles the Black Hills. The geological point of view of the Red Race Track is of the Spearfish formation from the Triassic Period. The Lakota story of the Red Race Track is one of many parts to the Lakota creation story. This project will compare the race track of a traditional Lakota map and a contemporary map using Remote Sensing and GIS. Lakota sacred sites in the area have also begun to be identified. The purpose of the project is to help protect, preserve, and educate the public in the significance of the Black Hills from the Lakota perspective. The Lakota people are a visual people and using Remote Sensing and GIS offers ways to also help manage cultural and non-cultural issues.
