Abstract
Assessing the Channel Islands Marine Reserves Using ROV Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources Author(s): Mi Ra Park, Konstantin Karpov, Dirk Rosen, Andy Lauderman, Michael Prall The California Department of Fish and Game, Marine Region, is responsible for protecting and managing California's marine resources. The Marine Region employs a range of management techniques for protecting fisheries, ecosystems, and habitat. One such management technique was the establishment of marine reserves within the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. With the establishment of the marine reserves, on-going monitoring efforts are necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of these protected areas. In 2003, a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) was employed to assess the habitat and species within the marine reserves. The integration of ROV and GIS has been critical for assessing and visualizing species distribution in the Channel Islands marine reserves.
