Abstract
GIS for the Mars Exploration Rovers Track: Remote Sensing Imagery Author(s): Trent Hare The Mars Exploration Rovers (MER) have been trekking across the Martian landscape for more than 300 days--an amazing feat, considering the nominal mission was only 90 days. A small portion of the MER team from the U.S. Geological Survey has lent a helping hand in several aspects of the mission including GIS support. This support includes pre-mission aspects of landing-site selection to the generation of GIS tools to help during daily operations. One pre-mission activity consisted of implementing a GIS Internet mapping server to help test landing-site hazards based on surface roughness, elevation, and dust cover. During the mission, the team has used GIS for 3D visualization to help plan daily events and the creation of specialty horizon routines to help maximize solar energy collection. This whirlwind tour will cover all aspects from pre-mission planning to an update of the mission as it rolls on.
