Abstract
![]() Houston Regional Data Transfer Matrix Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure Author(s): Max Samfield, Andre Bally, Grant Garrison, Susan Park The dream has been around for a long time--live GIS data transfer among disparate organizations, all compatibly congealed in a seamless distribution, on a low cost network. The reality has been harsh--political roadblocks, technical pitfalls and, sometimes, human pratfalls. In 2004, the Houston-Galveston Area Council's Geographic Data Committee announced its collaboration with Tadpole-Cartesia, an Esri business partner, to prove the pundits impaired. Using a common basemap created by the Geographic Data Committee, partners have developed and accumulated enormous collections of compatible data. Now, via an XML "transport server," previously "siloed" resources can be exchanged, replicated, and updated in real time. Predicted results include high levels of disaster recovery assuredness, vastly improved project management, and reduced duplication of effort. This paper/presentation will detail the issues, processes, pleasant surprises, and painful lessons learned in creating the Houston Regional Data Transfer Matrix, also known as HRDTM, or "Hardtime."
