Abstract
![]() Application Development Using the ArcReaderControl Object Track: Application Development Author(s): Thomas Nicoski The Kane County GIS-Team developed a number of GIS applications such as our enterprise data-centric Property Information Web Site (ArcIMS), our custom map-centric KaneCAD application (ArcObjects) and, finally, our mobile map-centric stand-alone KaneGIS application (MapObjects LT). Even with these GIS applications already in place, we found that some offices that did not have ArcGIS licenses preferred the stand-alone KaneGIS map-centric application to the data-centric ArcIMS web site. We determined that because MapObjects LT could not access the ArcSDE geodatabase and because it was too expensive to purchase additional copies of ArcGIS our only alternative was to purchase ArcGIS Engine along with ArcGIS Engine Runtime licenses. Before we purchased ArcGIS Engine we stumbled on the new ArcReaderControl object, which is part of the new free ArcReader application. This presentation will review how we were able to use ArcReaderControl in place of ArcGIS Engine to build a simple read only viewer KaneCADr (ArcReaderControl).
