Abstract
Using Mobile GIS to Manage the Removal of Dead Trees Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management Author(s): Justin Mank In the aftermath of the 2003 Wildfires in Southern California, the County of San Diego received a grant to remove dead, dying, and diseased trees that resulted from a multi-year drought and bark beetle infestation. Where paper maps and compasses were used in the past, the County of San Diego opted to use Mobile GIS Technology for the extensive fieldwork involved. Implementing ArcGIS, ArcPad and the ArcPad Application Builder, Microsoft Access, and Panasonic Toughbook's, a daily process was developed using Geodatabase and SQL scripts to share data among the field staff and to update six field machines daily. The field methods included the field staff locating participating parcels, collecting information gathered by the tree markers, and updating a parcel-based inventory of every tree marked for falling. Mobile GIS has afforded substantial labor cost savings and served as a force multiplier for the field staff.
