Abstract
 Pittsburgh's Hillsides and Watersheds: Using GIS to Investigate Post-Industrial Ecology Track: Ecology and Conservation Author(s): Lena Andrews, Tim Collins 3 Rivers 2nd Nature (3R2N) is a five-year project at Carnegie Mellon University that addresses aquatic, terrestrial, and social issues of rivers and streams, conducting an analysis of the green infrastructure that provides social, aesthetic, ecological, and economic benefit to the Pittsburgh region. GIS has been an instrumental component of 3R2N's work. This presentation will focus on two specific examples. For an in-depth study of Pittsburgh's hillsides, we used GIS to map the ecological systems in terms of geology, soils, botany and forest cover on steep slopes within the City of Pittsburgh. We are now using this analysis to make rational decisions on steep slope properties at the level of zoning policy, regulation and enforcement. The second project is a countywide watershed analysis in which we used GIS to map socioeconomic and environmental data at the watershed level in Allegheny County, targeting watersheds for restoration, preservation, and conservation.
