Abstract
Floodplain Redelineation for Oakland County, MI: Process and Impacts Track: Disaster Mangagement and Emergency Response Author(s): Sudha Maheshwari, Susan Moore Oakland County partnered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to improve the delineation of floodplains in Oakland County by leveraging local GIS data including topography, hydrography, and base map layers (parcels, street centerlines, municipal boundaries, etc.). This partnership that lasted more than two years has resulted in the new Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs) for the entire County. The County played a large role in piloting this effort and coordinating between the federal, state, and local levels to maximize local public participation and minimize obstacles in the adoption of final maps. This presentation will discuss the process of redelineation, its strength and weakness, and the changes in the floodplain that have resulted from the redelineation. The benefits of redelineation, both tangible and intangible, and the politics surrounding the redelineation will also be discussed.
