Abstract
The Evolution of Federated GIS in Maine Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure Author(s): Christopher Kroot, Michael Smith Decisions in many organizations are based on a wide range of information. In Maine, many state agencies increasingly find themselves utilizing GIS data and applications which are maintained by other state agencies. In the past, this has been accomplished by endlessly exporting and importing data into enterprise or departmental databases. Typically this resulted in unsyncrhonized versions and copies of data in many different places. Maine has started utilizing database technology, standard data models, and memoranda of agreement among agencies to allow simultaneous editing of centralized GIS data among several agencies. This presentation will discuss the political and technical details and challenges of implementing such a system and how it has benefitted Maine GIS users.
