Abstract
South Carolina Community Assessment Network (SCAN) Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): Jared Shoultz, Steven Black The Division of Biostatistics and Health GIS must provide health-related data to a wide variety of end-users ranging from concerned citizens and academics to public health professionals and federal organizations. End-users need an efficient way to access massive amounts of data while protecting patient confidentiality, fostering the decision-making process, and freeing up staff time to focus on in-depth analysis. SCAN, a user-friendly, real-time, interactive, Web-based data retrieval system was created to serve both spatial and non-spatial public health data. SCAN provides a standardized interface to access and integrate data generated throughout the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. SCAN is a true "Enterprise GIS" and utilizes the latest in standards-based Internet technology to serve both raster and vector environmental and public health data. A variety of map services coupled with custom applications with embedded GIS logic provides a family of solutions that spatially enables this agency.
