Integrating Remote Sensing and Web GIS for Active Fire Monitoring
Track: EMS/Fire
Author(s): Diane Davies

The integration of remote sensing data into web mapping services is a useful decision support tool for strategic fire management. Wildfires, when left unchecked, damage natural and manmade resources. To support fire managers, the MODIS Rapid Response (MRR) System and Web Fire Mapper deliver timely active fire information through the Web, email, and SMS/text messages. Near-real time fire information is produced using data transmitted by the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) instrument on board NASA's Terra and Aqua Earth Observation satellites. This data is received and processed, by the MRR System at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, to produce images and active fire locations. This data is ingested into a geodatabase at the University of Maryland and disseminated to users 2 to 4 hours after satellite overpass. Data is disseminated to users worldwide using an ArcIMS software-based Web GIS and a prototype system that sends fire managers both email alerts and SMS/text messages.
