Abstract
Documenting Geospatial Resources in Local Governments and Higher Education Institutions Track: Metadata and Data Publishing Author(s): James Wilson An outreach and training program was developed to assist local governments and higher education institutions in Virginia to document their geospatial resources and to make the metadata accessible to others. Local government data forms the foundation of many geospatial applications but is often undocumented. Faculty and students at universities often look for, use, and sometimes produce geospatial data for local governments, but they often have a difficult time in finding data and rarely document any new data they might produce or modify. An outreach program was developed to assess the current state of metadata production for a region in Virginia, then training sessions were held to train participants in the production of metadata. The production and dissemination of metadata based on the full FGDC and Virginia Spatial Metadata standards were covered using ArcCatalog and other tools.
