Abstract
National Hydrography Dataset -Plus: Powerful Applications Made Affordable Track: Water Resources Author(s): Lucinda McKay, Tim Bondelid The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a collection of U.S. surface water features that includes spatial representations and a limited set of attributes. USEPA was an instrumental partner with the USGS in creating the first NHD dataset. Since that time, USGS has continued to build NHD data of higher resolutions, while USEPA has concentrated on taking the 1:100,000 scale NHD to a more applications-ready stage. By improving the NHD data, adding attributes, and integrating the NHD with other datasets such as the National Elevation Dataset (NED) and the Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD), USEPA is building an NHD-Plus that will support powerful applications. This paper will address the application of NHD-Plus to perform drainage area delineation and characterization, fate transport and dilution modeling, risk and vulnerability assessment, estimation of spill impacts, and integration of the landscape and the stream network.
