Abstract
![]() Mapping Our World: Introducing GIS in Kenya Schools Track: Education Author(s): Sarah Simons To equip students effectively, most parents in urban schools deliberately enroll their children in schools offering computer classes. To bridge the IT gap rural and peri-urban schools with neither electricity nor computer facilities, Secondary and High School leavers from both rural and poor urban schools attend computer classes awaiting further studies admission. The growing computer literacy in Kenya has given rise to the need for computer-simulated activities to feed the curious minds of school children and the youth. Thus Oakar Services is introducing Mapping Our World: GIS Lessons for Educators to this captured audience to support inquiry-based learning and spatial thinking in the classroom. This paper will share challenges and lessons learned in jump-starting GIS projects in schools, including our attempts to customize Mapping Our World: GIS Lessons for Educators to the teaching of two parallel geography curricula in Kenyan schools.
