![]() Identification and Ranking of High Pedestrian Crash Zones Using GIS Track: Transportation Author(s): Vanjeeswaran Krishnakumar, Srinivas Pulugurtha, Shashi Nambisan Identification of high pedestrian crash zones to enhance pedestrian safety is vital to help allocate highway safety funds to produce maximum benefits by reducing the number and severity of crashes in a cost effective way. Unlike analysis of motor vehicle related crashes using GIS, limited research has been done on identifying high pedestrian crash zones in the past. The main objective of this research is to recommend a systematic methodology to identify and rank high pedestrian crash zones and develop a customized GIS based tool to implement the methodology. The tool identifies spatial concentration patterns and high pedestrian crash zones, extracts the crash characteristics and population details of selected zones, computes crash rates, and ranks the high crash zones. The developed tool is robust and has user friendly interfaces for data input and customizes various repetitive tasks. The tool was developed using commercial off-the-shelf software.
