Abstract
 Mapping the Central Corridor of the Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest Track: Ecology and Conservation Author(s): William Sharp Brazil is experiencing phenomenal growth and with it comes the pressure on the environment from agricultural and urban expansion. Today only fragments remain of the once exuberant Atlantic Rainforest (Mata Atl�ntica). In an effort to save the fragments and develop a management plan, our team was asked to map the region at a scale of 1:100,000 identifying land use and vegetation and integrating data from specialists. The study area is the central region of the Atlantic Rainforest and stretches from Salvador, Bahia, to the border of Espirito Santo with the state of Rio de Janeiro. Our mapping effort is part of a larger project that aims to establish an updated set of geographic data to support a management plan for the study area. This paper will present the project, the goals and the issues involved in creating and integrating the various physical and demographic GIS data layers.
