Abstract
Modeling Tricolored Blackbird Populations through GIS Technologies Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management Author(s): Lisa Clement In recent decades, populations of Tricolor Blackbirds in California have significantly declined. Reversing this decline is one of the highest priorities for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Landbird Conservation Program. Under contract with USFWS, EDAW, an environmental planning and design firm, is directing surveys to locate nesting Tricolor Blackbird in California. GIS technology has been incorporated into every phase of this project. A GIS will be created to map known nesting sites, identify potential nesting sites, organize the survey results, and model the distribution of Tricolor Blackbird colonies detected during the survey both spatially and temporally. A project collaboration website will be created that will allow users to input survey results dynamically and provide mapping and analytical tools. The results of this survey will be used to identify, prioritize, and implement conservation strategies throughout California.
