Abstract
Otay Valley Regional Park Invasive Species Removal Using Mobile GIS Track: Ecology and Conservation Author(s): Robert Rushlow, Carl Moczydlowsky The County of San Diego, Department of Parks and Recreation, along with HDR, developed an innovative, Tablet PC-based, mobile GIS solution to an exotic species removal project in the 8,600 acre Otay Valley Regional Park. Using a sub-meter Trimble GeoXT GPS and ArcView 9 loaded on an HP Tablet TC1100, the field biology teams were able to inventory and edit vegetation datasets on-the-fly and in the field, dramatically reducing office digitizing time. For complicated edits that needed to be completed in the office, the field team was able to utilize Esri's tablet tools for ArcView to "mark-up" the digital maps and store field notes directly in the .mxd file. Furthermore, the navigational benefits of tracking precise GPS locations with respect to the vegetation data and 6" pixel imagery enabled the biological field teams to "see around" topographical features to conduct an accurate and extensive inventory in four weeks.
