Abstract
![]() Implementing an Interoperable Global Mangrove Dataset Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources Author(s): Phillip Fox, Simon Wilkins, Corinna Ravilious, Ian May, James O'Carroll The UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) has been compiling mangrove data for more than 10 years. In 1997 this led to collaboration with the International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME) to combine and improve mangrove information holdings. The mangrove dataset is now under review, and UNEP-WCMC, as part of a joint initiative with other organisations, is working toward the release of a major update. The implementation of an interoperable system has improved the efficiency and quality of the updating process for both the spatial and aspatial databases. Utilisation of an online interactive map service (IMapS) is bringing together all the contributions that are being made around the world by different collaborators, providing a quick and easy way to validate, submit, and track information provided from a multitude of sources. The IMapS has been developed using Esri and Oracle Spatial technologies to utilise the tools and capabilities of both systems.
