Abstract
![]() Georgia Coordination with the Census Bureau Boundary and Annexation Survey Track: Census and Geodemographics Author(s): Terry Jackson Each year more than 100 municipal governments in Georgia annex territory into their jurisdictions. A few detach territory back to counties. According to state law, all annexation activity must be reported to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA). In 2000, the state developed a collaborative mapping initiative with the U.S. Bureau of the Census. Georgia has since actively coordinated with its local governments and the Census Bureau to focus their annual Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS) to all municipalities actively annexing. Georgia amended its laws to require participation in BAS. DCA established a Web-based annexation reporting and tracking system for use by local governments and the Census Bureau. This database is also a critical tool for state certification of BAS. These coordinated administrative procedures and information systems have dramatically improved the flow and quality of information available for BAS.
