Abstract
3D Modeling and Visualization Assist in Water Project Decision Making Track: Water Resources Author(s): Eric Edgley The State of Utah's Division of Water Resources Development Section is charged to assist with, and in some cases oversee, water development projects sponsored by municipalities and water districts of Utah. Since 2001 the GIS team for the Division has been assisting the Development Section present their ideas to clients and provide new and needed insight into a given project's feasibility and cost. Specifically, visualizing projects in three dimensions has proven to be a unique and useful way to convey important data to clients. A short list of examples include underwater earth excavation volumes, potential reservoir capacity volumes, dam enlargements, wildlife fisheries configurations, potential canal profiles, and shortest pipeline routes. The Division will demonstrate not only how these projects were created but also illustrate the broad range of applications to which 3D modeling can be applied.
