![]() GIS Revolutionizes Dig Alert Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Author(s): Martin Dix Dig Alert? Many of us don't even know what this is. Dig Alert is an extremely important service that was created to help safeguard underground construction. There is danger below the ground in the form of utility lines. Dig Alert/USA is a non-profit organization that provides excavation notifications to utility owners; contractors use this service to notify owners that excavation is imminent on or around their underground utilities. Owners respond by marking the approximate location of their underground utilities like sewer, gas, and power lines. Utility owners like Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) are required to mark their facilities within two days of proposed excavation under California State Law, and failure to do so can result in fines and owners can be charged with repair costs if damage is done. Learn how GIS and GPS technology transformed the dig alert process both in the office and out in the field.
