Abstract
AZSITE: The Trials of Centralizing Arizona's Archaeological Records Track: Archaeology Author(s): Rick Karl The State of Arizona is unique, or cursed, in that its cultural resource records have never been centrally located, recorded in standardized formats, used a standardized numbering system or stored in any standardized media. AZSITE was created through a consortium of the Arizona State Museum, The Museum of Northern Arizona, The State Historic Preservation Office and Arizona State University, with support from the Bureau of Land Management, to consolidate all archaeological records into a central GIS server, standardized recording format and submission criteria and to deliver the data over a secured Web site. Nine years after its initial implementation Arizona now has a functioning centralized server with 80,000 archaeological site records and web searchability. This achievement has not come without leaping over numerous technological and political hurdles.
