Abstract
New Ideas for GIS Emergency Management Applications, Sustainability, and Funding Track: Homeland Security/Homeland Defense Author(s): Linda Gerull YES! GIS is a strategic component of emergency preparedness, response, and recovery. The first portion of this presentation will review several tactical GIS applications developed for first responders and emergency operations centers (EOCs). Also included will be a discussion of disaster recovery applications that integrate GPS with GIS. The second portion of this presentation will review the system security, equipment redundancy/failover, and business practices that are needed to sustain GIS emergency operations during an incident. This presentation will conclude with ways to fund GIS applications with Department of Homeland Security grants. An innovative GIS application that includes vital data creation can result in a funded proposal. The information covered in this presentation is focused on local governments, but any agency or company implementing emergency management systems would learn techniques and best practices to provide effective, efficient, and funded emergency response with GIS technology.
