Abstract
![]() GIS in an Emergency Situation Track: Homeland Security/Homeland Defense Author(s): Frank Bishop Jr. In the early morning hours of January 6, 2005, two trains collided and derailed in the small community of Graniteville located in Aiken County, SC. One of the trains was carrying highly toxic and corrosive chlorine gas that began to leak from the tanker into the air. In the days and weeks following the accident, the County's GIS system was an integral part of the emergency, from the evacuation to clean-up efforts. This presentation will describe how GIS was used, things we can do better and things we never thought about until the real thing happened. The best planning can never prepare you for everything that comes up during the real thing. Frank Bishop Jr. Aiken County Govt.
