Abstract
Deforestation and the Pan American Highway: An Automated Land Use Classification and Transportation Cost Surface Analysis of the Darien Province of Panama Track: Defense and Intelligence Author(s): Mike Flaherty The goal is to create an automated system for creating a time series of economic transportation cost surfaces to model transportation costs in the Darien province. Supervised land use classifications of Landsat imagery will be used to create land use maps. These classified land use maps, along with elevation and road network data, will be used to produce spatially explicit economic models of transportation cost in the province. Sensitivity analysis techniques will then be applied and used to evaluate the image classification and model weighting methods. An automated production model for producing transportation cost surface maps will be developed. These maps and analysis will be used to explore the question: Is there a relationship between the decline of cativo forest area and road network development over time?
