Abstract
Tsunami Disaster Field Mapping and Data Management Lessons Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Author(s): Shawn Messick, Mark Yarmoshuk In response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami disaster, VVAF's IMMAP provided direct GIS technical support to both the United Nations Joint Logistics Center and the UN Humanitarian Information Centers in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand. VVAF staff played a key role assembling, maintaining and providing critical map support to all responding UN, humanitarian, military and Governmental organizations. This latest IMMAP deployment also occasioned our first use of the GIS Corps volunteers. From our experience, including the later Nias Earthquake, we will discuss the various types of data used/desired, their sources, maintenance, applications and misapplications and how to best generate the required detail. In line with the technical discussions we will also consider the interrelated institutional issues of local versus international, data preparation, data sharing and coordination of efforts.
