Abstract
Exploring GIS in Documenting Human Rights Abuses Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Author(s): Matisse Bustos, Bryan Nunez WITNESS provides video equipment and training to local NGOs around the world to empower human rights defenders to use video as a strategic tool to uncover abuses. Through our website which features partners' videos, we plan to incorporate Esri's ArcView to allow our audience, from online activists to national and international decision-makers, to more fully appreciate the geo-political context of human rights abuses on the ground. In addition, the mapping of third party NGO resources in the regions where our partners are located will strengthen collaborations and maximize efforts within these networks to alleviate violations such as forced recruitment of child soldiers in the Eastern DRC to the terrorizing of IDPs in Burma, from the encroachment on indigenous lands in the Philippines by the government and international business interests to the pattern of unsolved and brutal murders of hundreds of women in Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua, Mexico.
