SmartConservation: Integrating Prioritization Models, Decision Support, and Ecological Green Infrastructure Tools
Track: Ecology and Conservation
Author(s): Clare Billett

SmartConservation is a program developed by Natural Lands Trust (NLT) with assistance from the Southeast Pennsylvania conservation community. It uses GIS and landscape modeling techniques to identify and prioritize the best natural lands and ecological resources throughout the Expanded Piedmont ecoregion of Pennsylvania using three primary components. The audience will receive an overview of the three components of this value—interpretation, modeling, and decision-support program, with an explanation of their purpose and how they interrelate. Two components are 'top-down' spatial prioritization processes, while the third is a 'bottom-up' Web-based decision-support system based on ArcIMS. In addition to reviewing the basis for landscape modeling—on which all aspects of the program is based—an overview will show how the mapping tools can be applied to parcel prioritizations at the local level to strategically focus direct land protection or ecological restoration actions within any specific landscape of the program's service area.
