Abstract
A GIS-Based Kriging Approach for Exploring Air Pollutants and Asthma Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): Ta Chien Chan, Po-Huang Chiang, Jen-Hsiang Chuang, Mei-Lien Chen, I-Fang Mao This research utilized data from the Bureau of National Health Insurance (NHI) and Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) during 2000 to 2002. We used asthma's daily outpatient visit record from National Health Insurance database (NHI) in Taiwan. Our definition o asthma case was coded in 493 which was defined by the International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). We chose four air pollutants--sulfur dioxide, ozone, suspended part. <= 10 microns in diameter, and nitrogen dioxide. The Ordinary Kriging spatial interpolation technique was employed to create prediction maps for the pollutants. Exposure calculation and batching processing were performed using Esri's ArcView 9 and ArcView Spatial Analyst extension. Unlike traditional buffer analysis in environmental health, the automated kriging method that we used here can be applied to a large number of sampling data in public health research.
