Abstract
Spill Modeling Using NHDPLus Track: Water Resources Author(s): William Samuels The value-added attributes of NHDPLus include mean stream flow and velocity. These attributes, coupled with real-time stream flow measurements from USGS gauges are used to calculate travel time and concentration of spills upstream of drinking water intakes. Reverse modeling has also been applied to NHDPlus to provide indications of the origin of contamination, given a detection.Upstream travel time zones are generated based on average or real-time velocity. Both continuous and instantaneous releases can be simulated. A database of chemical, biological, and radiological contaminants has been developed that contains information about levels of concern and first-order decay rates that are used in the model. Assets such as hazardous material sites, intakes, municipal and industrial dischargers, dams, and bridges can be overlaid on both the downstream and upstream trace for assessing the consequences of the spill.
