Optimizing Groundwater-Level Monitoring Network Using Environmental Suitability Analysis
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Nisai Wanakule

Tampa Bay Water uses an optimization-simulation model to manage groundwater supply in the tricounty area of the northern Tampa Bay. The model was formulated to maximize water levels at monitoring wells associated with the wetlands to be protected while satisfying various constraints including demands, physical limits, and operating policy. An approach that couples an environmental suitability analysis with an optimization method was applied to choose a monitoring network. A VB program utilizing Arc GIS Geostatistical Analyst and ArcGIS Spatial Analyst were developed and employed to optimally select existing and new monitoring wells for the network. Details of the approach and results will be discussed in this presentation.
