The Power of GIS Technology for Timber Management
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Author(s): Mike Darr, Stephen Ellis

Forestry professionals are consistently challenged to balance resources and assets in an ever-changing environment, relying on accurate and quality information to make the most informed decisions. Forecon, a forestry and natural resources management consulting firm, has seen firsthand how the power of GIS technology can help the forestry industry better manage resources and collect, view, and analyze data. Forecon has greatly enhanced its services for the industry. Through Forecon's new enterprise geodatabase, the company can easily access and categorize data generated from fieldwork. Forecon has improved production with new GIS tools for harvesting stands, developing cruise plot locations, and maintaining tract/stand ownership information. Now, Forecon can generate needed reports in three mouse clicks instead of three days, saving time and money. A new client/server desktop application enables Forecon's staff to perform growth modeling of timber areas, generate quarterly and ad hoc reports for clients, and access Discount Cost Forecasting.
