USAF Communications CIPS Visualization Component
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Jon Kish

ArcGIS has facilitated the Department of Defense Telecommunications Community to have a better understanding of the end-to-end connectivity of both voice and data transmission. Initially developed for the United States Air Force (USAF), this tool has the ability to utilize the Web and expand the reach of engineers and cable technicians in the repair, management, and planning of large networks. The development was inspired by the 38th Engineering and Installation Group (38 EIG) within the USAF. ArcGIS is instantiated on a program to connect communications infrastructure project costs with the GeoBase Common Installation Picture for visualization of proposed projects. A customized ArcGIS application, named the CIPS Visualization Component (CVC), has been developed to facilitate the incorporation of thousands of manhole drawings and cable runs that support both communications (telephone calls) and transfer of digital data (LAN/WAN) into a geodatabase that can connect and display with financial information.
