Abstract
WMS: A Mutually Beneficial Mechanism for Sharing Data Track: Defense and Intelligence Author(s): Matthew Hess, Thomas Mayes Two primary objectives of any geospatial enterprise should be to minimize storage and maintenance of static data and to leverage existing investments to the extent possible. These were objectives in developing Navy's Environmental Information Management System (EIMS). EIMS has been tremendously successful in dynamically integrating ever-increasing numbers of Web map services worldwide. This mechanism can provide efficient and effective data sharing. Data providers can realize broader use of their data if that data can be dynamically linked via a user's ArcMap application. Disadvantages of clearinghouses, FTP sites, and so forth, are that data must be downloaded and stored redundantly, and constant monitoring is required to ensure that timely updates are obtained. For mutual benefits of Web map services to be realized, format and content standards are needed for how Web map services are published.
