Using Mobile Government to Capture Homeland Security Related Assets
Track: Homeland Security/Homeland Defense
Author(s): Kirstin Platt

Because of its proximity to major military interests, vital interstates, tunnels, and waterways, the City of Newport News, Virginia, is keenly aware of possible homeland security threats. With the Department of Public Works' implementation of its GIS-centric asset management system, the Department needed to obtain security details of its 306 City-owned and/or maintained structures that were previously not captured. To begin acquiring security-related assets, the Public Works' GIS staff applied for and was awarded a Homeland security Mobile Government grant. With the grant, the Building Services Security Asset Management (BSSAM) program was developed and incorporated in our Buildings UML model. BSSAM is a custom GPS-based application used by the Building Services Division's frontline professionals to capture security-related assets and their associated attributes while in the field. These assets are then added to the asset management system, thus immediately available for use during any potential homeland security event or natural disaster.
