Using ArcGIS and ArcObjects for Approximate Floodplain Mapping
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Erin Atkinson

ArcGIS and ArcObjects were used to automate the process of delineating approximate floodplains. Visual Basic was used to create a DLL that runs completely within the ArcGIS environment and calculate discharge and water surface elevations. Standard regional regression equations were used to calculate discharge values, and Manning's equation was used to calculate normal depth. The programming design goals were to create a tool to perform approximate calculations to determine approximate floodplains, be able to map the computed water surface elevations on the best available topography, use accepted hydrologic and hydraulic calculation methods, and be able to generate new floodplains in an efficient manner. The presentation will outline the challenges that prompted the development of this tool, how the calculations and mapping are performed, and examples of how the tool has achieved the original design goals.
