Abstract
Improving Safety and Efficiency in Rail Maintenance Ising Intelligent LBS Track: Transportation Author(s): Nathan Thomas, George Taylor, Mark Ware, Andrew Olden As safety and productivity considerations are of primary importance for the delivery of rail track infrastructure and its maintenance, such tasks are carried out under strict operational procedures. Significant improvements can be made using handheld systems running an intelligent information management system made accessible through a feature-rich, Esri-based mapping environment. The University of Glamorgan has developed a Map Matched GPS (MMGPS) software layer embedded within an Esri ArcMap environment. This allows for integration with location-based systems (LBS) to provide improved reliability and accuracy when tracking mobile objects or resources. This paper investigates the viability, benefits, and risks associated with the use of handheld digital mapping, utilizing Esri's ArcPad software combining GIS and GPS systems for rail track maintenance.
